The Ferrari that defined a generation

458 is the Ferrari before the turbo era — a naturally-aspirated 9,000-rpm V8 that revs the way Ferrari V8s have revved since the 1970s, in a chassis that proves Maranello can build a mid-engine car as forgiving as it is fast. The Spider takes the coupe's 458 character and adds a folding hardtop that drops in 14 seconds. Top down on Route 7, top up at JFK arrivals, the V8 the same in either configuration. Future-classic the day it left the factory.

When the 458 Spider is the right answer

A Sunday morning Merritt run

Top down at 6 AM, north on the Merritt to Litchfield, the F136 V8 climbing through 9,000 rpm in third gear past the Lake Lillinonah turnoff. Coffee at the General Store in Bridgewater. Back south by lunch. The 458 Spider is the car that justifies waking up at 5.

Greenwich Concours d'Elegance arrival

June, Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, the field full of pre-war Bentleys and Pebble Beach veterans. The 458 in deep purple is the modern foil. Park it on the grass, leave the keys, the V8 cools while the crowd circles.
