Scenic Merritt Parkway drive from Greenwich to Westport

THE GREENWICH JOURNAL

Four roads worth the gas

Friday afternoon, top down or top up. Belle Haven to the Litchfield hills, Cos Cob waterfront to Kent foliage. The routes that locals actually drive.

We know the driveways. That is the short answer to why locals who already own the exotic still call us for a Saturday. The long answer is the roads. Connecticut has a handful of drives that are genuinely worth the fuel, and none of them show up in Google Maps as scenic routes. These are the four we send clients on most often — route notes, stop-offs, and the car we would match to each.

The Merritt north to Litchfield

Pick up in Greenwich, Merritt Parkway north to exit 49, Route 8 to Route 4 west. Ninety minutes one way, and the Merritt itself is the draw — stone-arch bridges from the 1930s, tree tunnel through most of Fairfield County, no trucks. Stops worth the detour: Hopkins Vineyard on Lake Waramaug for a lunch pour, Boulder Creamery in Cornwall for the drive back, the covered bridge at West Cornwall if you want the photo. Top-down weather, Rolls-Royce Dawn. Top-up, the Wraith.

River Road, Cos Cob to Stamford

Quiet waterfront morning drive. Park at Cos Cob Library, head south on River Road to Mianus, then back up through Old Greenwich. Thirty minutes, no traffic before 8am, and the road has enough corners that you notice the suspension. Best on a Saturday before the clubs are awake, breakfast at Aux Delices or The Beach House after. Best vehicle: Wraith. The fastback coupe rewards the corners and the coastal light.

Route 7 north to Kent

The Berkshires foothills route. Greenwich to Kent through Wilton, Ridgefield, New Milford. Two hours one way. Fall foliage peaks the first week of October and the drive doubles in beauty for the week. Stops: Kent Falls State Park (park, walk, ten minutes), Kent Coffee Roasters for a to-go, Litchfield Distillery on the way back if the driver is not driving. Best vehicle: Cullinan. The miles stretch well in that cabin and the ride-height handles the occasional frost-heave without complaint.

The Round Hill loop

Local-only feel. Start at Greenwich Country Club, head north on Round Hill Road, west at Fairfield Road, south through Mianus River Park, return via Lake Avenue. Forty-five minutes, no highway, mostly one-and-a-half lanes of old-growth trees and driveway gates. Best on a weekend morning before ten. Any car in the fleet works. This is the drive where the car is an excuse to be out before everyone else wakes up.

Reserve a Cullinan, Dawn, or Wraith for the weekend. The concierge can pre-arrange stops at Hopkins, Boulder, or Litchfield Distillery before you leave, and we deliver at the driveway so the drive starts when you open the door.
